A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
