They're Repeating in America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and defining moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid is 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have conceived – unilaterally destroying large sections of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the leader seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who should not find it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this change developed more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre among Americans could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.

It is emphatically absolutely not the account of a powerful ruler appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his teaching focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to present the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when someone steals your outer garment you must offer him your sweater too.

The evident and direct reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of radical love centered on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but owing to its inherent radicalness demanding to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or refuse?

America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to that which renders it unique and beautiful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it imply feigning the most damaging of both America and Christian faith did not happen; it means both humility and conviction, a combination that committed US believers should embrace.
