Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
